Dresden, Germany
So far I've taken day/weekend trips to Leipzig, Köln, Hamburg, and Dresden (in order of preference).
Dresden is the capital of Saxony, has an interesting religious history, and it's where all the hikers headed to the Saxony Switzerland National Park stop before starting their trek. The city was known as the Jewel Box (because of its Baroque and Rococo city center) but was bombed to bits in WWII by the Allies and didn't start really rebuilding until the reunification of Germany in 1990.
Frauenkirche is one of the main attractions in the Altstadt. I didn't get to see its pretty pink interior, but the exterior is stunning. Martin Luther stands guard outside.
EAT
- Cafe Milchmadchen (Grunaer Str. 27, 01069 Dresden) has "American" style breakfasts and is near Grosser Garten so it was our first stop in Dresden.
- Camondas Eis Kontor (Schloßstraße 22, 01067 Dresden): We walked past people eating the European equivalent of fudgsicles (!!!) and had to get our own. See below. 100% worth it even at 11am because it's never too early for eis.
- Augustusgarten (Wiesentorstraße 2, 01097 Dresden): Songs that say you need new boys in every city never tried to make a Biergarten tour in Germany. This was our pick in Dresden.
- Wohnzimmer Dresden (Jordanstraße 27, 01099 Dresden): Audrey loves a good Wohnzimmer. We stopped by this cafe to collect data points on cafe furniture for her future Berlin business. So far, we dig "old grandparent's living room" with moody lighting vibes.
- Anamit (Louisenstraße 30, 01099 Dresden): Skip the summer rolls (serving summer rolls without peanut sauce is a sin) and get the coconut rice with mango...if you don't like sharing get two because the serving is small.
SEE
- Dresdner Molkerei (Bautzner Str. 79, 01099 Dresden): The 1998 Guinness Book of Records said that this is "the most beautiful milk shop in the world." The first floor cheese shop has gorgeous tile but there are no pictures allowed inside. I wouldn't recommend trekking over to the residential NE side of the city just to visit this milk shop.
- Palais Grosser Garten (Hauptallee 5, 01219 Dresden): Nice lil stroll in the park never hurt anyone.
- Frauenkirche & Kreuzkirche
- Brühl's Terrace (Georg-Treu-Platz 1, 01067 Dresden): This terrace is nicknamed the "balcony of Europe" but the crowds of tourists and bubble blowers remind me of the Passeig de Lluís Companys Promenade in Barcelona. Also I think they forgot the Balcony of Europe title has already been claimed by the folks in Nerja, Spain.
- Zwinger (Sophienstraße, 01067 Dresden)
- Kunsthofpassage (Görlitzer Str. 21-25, 01099 Dresden): This feels like you're in the fun house section of Six Flags - walk through the passage as you make your way towards Äußere Neustadt.
