Gazzo, Neukölln
I want to go to Gazzo for all future dinner dates, catch ups, pizza parties, breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. It's THAT good. This sourdough pizza joint in Neukölln does not disappoint and is one of the best meals I've had in Berlin.
I made it to this cute little restaurant after an afternoon of volunteering with Democrats Abroad. Meeting a few crazy Berliners and talking about general anxiety over the looming election with fellow Americans definitely helped me work up an appetite.
Audrey and I were seating at the bar, which has a big plexiglas barrier to shield the bartenders from mask-less common folk. Watching the chefs toss pizza in the kitchen and bartenders mix up drinks from our high chairs felt a little like watching animals in a zoo...but better because it's pizza, prosecco, and guys wearing breton stripes.
While the pizza we ordered was delicious (#8 with alllll the peppers), the soft serve ice cream was the real showstopper.
Freshly churned buffalo-milk from Brandenburg. Served with olive oil, sea-salt and short bread from Katie's Blue Cat.
The milk comes from the local buffalo farm @paolella_mozzarella. This menu item really shows what Gazzo is all about. The milk is from a local farm where animals have free access to pastures and ponds. The farm is run by a group of guys who thought “why not open a buffalo farm in Brandenburg and make mozzarella?”, then actually did it! Gazzo loves to support local farms/chefs and this ice cream is one of the best things to come from that mission. The owners of Gazzo even adopted one of the cows on the buffalo farm and named it Gustavina,
Honorable mention: Even the bathrooms in this restaurant are adorable. With Amalfi Coast wallpaper reminiscent of a Stuart Cantor photograph and light Italian opera music playing from hidden speakers, you'll think you're actually in Italy for a moment.
Find Gazzo at Hobrechtstraße 57, 12047 Berlin and on Instagram @gazzopizza.
