Interior Design Braindump
One of my favorite things to do is read interior design blogs. Living in a furnished apartment doesn't let me decorate the way I want (I have AN ORANGE ARMCHAIR...don't ask me about it) so I'm patiently curating my future home. I'm not sure what the writers are talking about half the time and I don't have the eye to discern Ikea from Casa Pomelo but I love imagining people living in the photographed spaces. I especially love seeing how people take the same type of items and bring it together differently. It's like how in Berlin everyone has the same Ikea furniture (lamp, dishes, couch, you name it). I feel especially proud of myself when I can recognize an artist's print hanging on someone's wall.
One of my favorite blogs to read is Cup of Jo (definitely not their target demographic, but I'm 35 years old at heart). They have a Design category on the blog and sometimes profile different people's apartments around the world.
Here are a few of my favorites from Cup of Jo:
A French Couple in a Small Brooklyn Apartment - this gives me hope that whatever closet-sized NYC/DC apartment I'll live in can still have style
A Mexico City Home (With a Tree Inside!) - More color than I'd ever plan to have in my own home, but I love how "adult" this home is even with two children
A Sea Captain’s House - I loved the lived-in look of this 18th-century Provincetown home. Its knickknacks make it seem like nobody would notice the residual crumbs from cutting up a baguette at a spontaneous dinner party.
Cozy Copenhagen Home - I love everything Danish and this Copenhagen home is no exception. The minimalist and bright apartment seems otherworldly. It also shows that you don't need everything to be buttoned up and that sometimes taping up artwork looks just as good as it living in a frame.
A quote that I love from a recent post:
“To make my space homey, I like to frame ordinary things I’ve saved over the years. I saved a sugar packet from a trip to Cuba with my family. A bus ticket from my cousin’s town in Poland. Guitar picks I caught at concerts, napkin doodles, my mom’s grocery list."
This is the type of decor I'm into - intellectually intimate and not easily understood.
Some Other Favorites:
A-Frame Investment Beach House Reno - I adore how the family renovated this unique home. When in doubt, go all white! The pink runner on the stairs is the perfect pop of color and I can imagine renting out this home for a summer weekend with friends.
French Farmhouse-Style Cottage - of all the homes, this is the one I'd most like to live in. It's small and manageable, just my style, and perfect for entertaining. It looks like everything in the house is being used (even if it's just manufactured to look that way). I want my future home to have these vibes - Kate Moss print, vase of dried lavender, wooden crates, blacked out adirondack chairs, and all!
